Before we see how to create categories, subcategories. Let us first understand why does one need to do the categorization of products on an e-store. Below are the few reasons:
- It makes the search for a product simple.
- It helps unite similar kind of products together.
- It helps the end customer to compare products.
Eg: For understanding the categorization let us assume a Merchant has a store who sell various categories like Apparels, Home furnishing, Shoes, Electronics
Please note that these categories that needs to be created will be top level category. Now further these categories will be sub-divided
We can divide as below:
Level 1: Apparels, Home furnishing, Shoes, Electronics
Level 2: Apparels: Men, Women
Home furnishing: Cushion Covers,Mattresses, Bed Covers
Shoes: Men, Women, Sale
Electronics:Mobile, Television, Refrigerator
Level 3: Apparels: Men:Casual, Formal, Party Wear
Apparels: Women:Casual, Formal, Party Wear
Home furnishing: Cushion Covers:Handmade, Printed
Home furnishing: Mattresses: Cotton, Foam
Home furnishing: Bed Covers: Rajasthani Print, Handcrafted
Shoes: Men: Formal, Casual, Party wear
Shoes: Women: Formal, Casual, Party wear
Shoes: Sale: Puma, Reebok, Adidas, Casual, Formal, Party Wear
Electronics:Mobile:Nokia, Sony, Samsung, Apple, Micromax
Electronics:Television: Sony, Samsung, Videocon
Electronics: Refrigerator: Whirlpool, Samsung, IFB, Kelvinator, Voltas
We can do this above categorization in our panel by following below steps:
How to create categories?
Create a Main category
Step 1- Go to Catalog->Categories
Step 2- Click on add button on the right corner
Step 3- Add the data as shown in the screenshot below.
Please note when we create the category as main category we need to check the Top option.
Step 4- Since the category that we are creating in this example is the main category, no option will be selected for Parent Category in the advance tab.
Please enter all other details as described in the screenshot below
How to create Sub-categories?
Now let us see how to create sub-category, which means how to create a category under the category that we just created.
Step 1- Go to Catalog->Categories & click on add button
The below screen will come
Add the Category Name.
Enter data in the description field if you want to.
Don’t click on Top.
Step 2- In advanced settings Add the Meta title description & Keyword as explained earlier & save it by clicking on the blue save button shown on top right corner. Also, since this is a sub-category please select Parent category as shown below:
* Entering data in SEO URL field is not mandatory. Our system has capability to generate these automatically but if you want these of your choice you can enter the data but make sure all the SEO-URL should be unique, be it product page URL, Web page URL , Category page etc.
* If the Status is turned OFF, the category doesn’t show on the website.
Note: In order to display more than 2 level of categories on the menu, you need to create TOP MENU
